Founded in 1920 by the brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family business that was originally dedicated to the marketing of fine Douro wines and liqueurs. Today, the oldest family-run wine company still operating in the municipality of Anadia, in the 1930s, it passed the ban on the production of Porto wines outside Vila Nova de Gaia, to sell Bairrada table wines. At the end of the 50’s, one of the most famous wine brands in the Bairrada region – the “Frei João” – was born and, a little later, the “Porta dos Cavaleiros” brand from the Dão region. Manual harvest. Grapes transported in pallets. Maceration in small mills at a temperature between 24 and 26ºC. Use of gravity techniques for grape movement. Aging for 22 months in new French oak casks. This is the first wine from the old vineyard plot (M7) of Quinta dos Muros. The wine that determined that this parcel should be preserved. It is the result of 27 varieties, and a lot of care and passion throughout the process. A red that deserves attention when you have it in the glass. Contains sulfites.

Vineyards installed in red soils derived from brown or crystalline limestones, with shale spots, benefiting from a Mediterranean climate with high thermal amplitudes and hot and dry summers. After the green interventions required during the growing cycle, the grapes were manually harvested and transported to the winery in small boxes. After malolatic fermentation, the wine partially aged for 12 months in 2. and 3. year French and American oak barrels. After bottling it rested in bottle for 2 months in our basement. To preserve all its qualities, this wine has not been stabilized, it can naturally create a deposit. Clear wine, violet red, aromas of cherry, blackberry, spices and floral notes. Structured, balanced and voluminous, with full body and persistent finish. Contains Sulfites.

Destemming, thermal shock, skin maceration, pressing, static decanting of the must, fermentation at controlled temperatures: 70% in stainless steel vats and 30% in new American and French oak barrels. Aging for 6 months in stainless steel vats and in new oak barrels, on fine lees. Crystalline appearance, straw color with greenish reflections. Grapefruit and apricot notes, notes of mint green complemented with white pepper and nutmeg. Elegant and harmonious on the palate, balanced between fruit and spices. An intense and persistent finish. Contains sulfites.

Total destemming and separate fermentation in small mills with mechanical steps. Malolactic fermentation in french oak barrels followed by stage in second and third year barrels up to 6 months. Present a ruby color, an attractive aroma, with frank ripe fruit. On the palate is fresh and with floral notes. End of mouth soft and lively in the mouth, very gastronomic.

Manual harvest at night, very selective, in 20kg boxes. Direct pressing without crushing, with natural defecation. Long fermentation at 12ºC, part in stainless steel vats (80%) and part in barrels (20%). Intense battonage during the first 30 days in barrel. Straw yellow color, intense fresh nose, floral notes with texture, rich in aromas and good persistence. Contains sulfites.
