Founded in 1920 by the brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family business that was originally dedicated to the marketing of fine Douro wines and liqueurs. Today, the oldest family-run wine company still operating in the municipality of Anadia, in the 1930s, it passed the ban on the production of Porto wines outside Vila Nova de Gaia, to sell Bairrada table wines. At the end of the 50’s, one of the most famous wine brands in the Bairrada region – the “Frei João” – was born and, a little later, the “Porta dos Cavaleiros” brand from the Dão region. The grapes were fermented in a used French oak vat (40% whole bunches) with only indigenous yeasts, followed by a post-fermentation maceration for 30 days. The wine aged for 16 months in a used French oak barrel, with 3000 liters, and in used French oak barrels with 225 liters. Ruby color, floral aroma, light bush, strawberry, raspberry, light white pepper, dry leaves, tobacco box and tar. Dry, medium acidity and long finish. Contains sulfites.

Flor de São José Reserva White

Grapes harvested by grape varieties and plots in boxes of 20 kg and placed in the cold at 5-6º C. After being fully destemmed they are crushed. The must was subtly pressed and decanted until it reached the necessary clarity. Fermentation and subsequent full aging in 500 liter barrels, 60% new and 40% used. The lees were removed every month to keep them in suspension. After eight months, the final blend was made and the wine was pasted before being bottled. With a citrus color, the wine is initially very discreet and complex with mineral notes evolving later to some fresh and floral notes, more discreet and elegant. In the mouth it is fresh, with a present acidity and very balanced. Fine, complex and very elegant, it shows an excellent balance between alcohol, fruit and acidity, and a lively, fine and quite long finish. Contains Sulfites.

The wines from the Alfrocheiro variety planted in Dão, are distinguished by their aromatic freshness and enormous capacity for evolution in the bottle. Part of this wine aged in French oak barrels, about 18 months, while the rest aged in stainless steel vats. The Alfrocheiro variety planted in Dão gives rise to wines that are distinguished by the freshness and variety of their aromas, complemented by a volume and tannic structure of great harmony and delicacy. Quinta de Ventozelo Reserva White

Manual harvest, during the month of September. At the entrance to the winery, the grapes were rigorously selected. This was followed by fermentation in stainless steel vats at low temperatures (15-16º), in order to enhance the fermentative aromas of the varieties. Combined in 300 liter French and Hungarian oak barrels for 6 months. This Reserva displays a very elegant profile. On the nose, citrus aromas stand out, but also notes of apricot and a floral touch. On the palate it has vibrant acidity and structure, with a long, mineral finish. Contains sulfites.

Manual harvest and then transported in boxes. Alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel vats, at a controlled temperature of 14ºC. The wine remains during the aging in stainless steel vats with its fine lees, in order to guarantee some complexity and natural longevity of the wine. This delicious wine reveals an attractive floral and fruity exuberance, with fresh and citrus aromas, reminiscent of orange blossom, orange peel and rose. In the mouth, it shows strong minerality and the same exuberance that we find in the nose, in a lively, elegant and fresh style. It is the ideal partner for sushi, seafood and salads.
