Cartuxa Reserva Red – A Legacy Rooted in History
The Cartuxa Reserva Red draws its character from the oldest vineyards of the Eugénio de Almeida Foundation, in Évora. Its name pays tribute to the Carthusian monks who inhabited the Monastery of Santa Maria Scala Coeli from 1587, and the wine has carried that legacy since its first vintage in 1987. The blend of Alicante Bouschet, Aragonez, and Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from old vines planted in granite soils, fermented separately in stainless steel tanks and French oak vessels, then aged for 15 months in new French oak barrels, followed by an extended 48-month rest in bottle.
Tasting Notes
Deep and vivid in colour, the Cartuxa Reserva Red opens with layered aromas of ripe dark fruit, plum and blueberry, woven together with spice, cedar and subtle vanilla from the French oak ageing. The palate is structured and generous, with well-integrated tannins, balanced acidity and a long, lingering finish that speaks to the quality of its old-vine origins.
Pairing and Occasions
At its best alongside grilled or braised red meats, game, and aged cheeses, the Cartuxa Reserva Red should be served between 16°C and 18°C. Its refinement and complexity make it a natural choice for memorable dining occasions and a distinguished gift for those who value wines with depth and a story worth telling.
