Founded in 1920 by the brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family business that was originally dedicated to the marketing of fine Douro wines and liqueurs. Today, the oldest family-run wine company still operating in the municipality of Anadia, in the 1930s, it passed the ban on the production of Porto wines outside Vila Nova de Gaia, to sell Bairrada table wines. At the end of the 50’s, one of the most famous wine brands in the Bairrada region – the “Frei João” – was born and, a little later, the “Porta dos Cavaleiros” brand from the Dão region. Manual harvest. Manual choice of curls. Destemming and slight crushing of the berries. The grapes were fermented in granite vats with foot treading, stainless steel vats and new 500l French oak barrels. Each of these types of fermentation gives the wine a particular style. After aging for 19 months in barrels, we form the batch and carry out a light gluing prior to bottling. The wine rested for 1 year before being marketed.
