Founded in 1920 by the brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family business that was originally dedicated to the marketing of fine Douro wines and liqueurs. Today, the oldest family-run wine company still operating in the municipality of Anadia, in the 1930s, it passed the ban on the production of Porto wines outside Vila Nova de Gaia, to sell Bairrada table wines. At the end of the 50’s, one of the most famous wine brands in the Bairrada region – the “Frei João” – was born and, a little later, the “Porta dos Cavaleiros” brand from the Dão region. Luis Pato Vinhas Velhas Red
Created with grapes from the Berry variety planted in clay-limestone soil, in vineyards with an average age of 40 years. Vinified in stainless steel vats for 10 days, it was matured in used (650l) pipes for 12 months. It accompanies dishes with game meat as well as other red meat dishes. It will last for more than 15 years.

Assobio White
Manual harvest, selection table, pneumatic pressing, alcoholic fermentation with controlled temperatures (12º to 14ºC). Stage in stainless steel vats on fine lees. Yellow citrus color, intense and fresh aroma dominated by citrus fruits, tropical fruits and white pulp fruits. In the mouth stands out its acidity that together with its volume and texture give it a long and refreshing finish. Contains Sulfites.
Soalheiro Nature Pur Terroir White
Biological Wine: The color and scent of Nature is intense and the taste is complex, asking to be discovered with enthusiasm. After all it is a 100% Alvarinho made without addition of sulphites, with complete alcoholic and malolactic fermentation. Based on production concepts that value biodiversity, this Soalheiro is made from grapes of the Alvarinho variety. The bottling, without filtration, causes the wine in the bottle to be subject to deposit, being this deposit essential for the protection of the oxidation, facilitating a stable evolution of this Out-of-the-Box Soil. Alvarinho grapes are harvested manually in the vineyards of Quinta da Soalheiro, where we use production concepts that value biodiversity and the wine-growing ecosystem, promoting environmental sustainability. The color and aroma are intense and despite the absence of added sulfites the aroma and the flavor have minerality and fruit. flavor is complex with soft onset and round due to malolactic complete with striking and intense finish.
Soalheiro 9% White
An intense, elegant wine with volume. Beginning at the end of August, this harvest was the earliest ever harvested in Soalheiro, but it demonstrated an exceptional balance between the fruit and the acidity of the Alvarinhos of the unique terroir of Monção and Melgaço. Alvarinho grapes without late harvest were harvested in small capacity boxes and transported to the winery in a short period of time. The must obtained by pressing the whole grapes was decanted and fermented at low temperature. The fermentation took place in stainless steel until reaching the balance of sweetness and acidity intended and that dictated the final alcohol of this Soalheiro - 9%. Citrus and tropical notes of the Alvarinho variety with a balance of unusual acidity and sweetness.

Soalheiro Granit Magnum White
The Soalheiro Granit reveals the more mineral side of the Alvarinho variety. It is a Alvarinho that leaves a specific selection of vineyards planted above 200 meters of altitude, revealing the minerality that relates the soil of granite origin of the terroir of Monção and Melgaço and the Alvarinho variety, improved with the batonage and the stage in the fine lees . The fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a higher temperature than usual in white wines, showing an elegant and more mineral aroma with a dry and persistent finish. The Alvarinho grapes used in the Soalheiro Soalheiro come from small-sized vineyards implanted in soil of granite origin above 200 meters altitude and located in the private microclimate of the Monção and Melgaço sub-region, the northernmost region of Portugal. The grapes, exclusively from the Alvarinho variety, are harvested manually in small capacity boxes and transported to the winery in a short time. After pressing, the decanted w decants for 48 hours, followed by fermentation in stainless steel tanks at a higher temperature than usual, using pre-selected yeasts for this purpose. The bottling takes place after the batonage and the stage in the fine lees. Citrine yellow color, aroma with the profile restrained and elegant with mineral notes and dry finish.

Luis Pato Quinta do Ribeirinho Pé Franco Red
Man has dreams. My dream 23 years ago was to create a wine that would reveal the wines before phylloxera arrived in Europe. Thus was born the name Pé Franco by what is known. I planted 1.2ha of vines of the Baga variety, as was used in pre-phylloxera Europe, directly on sandy soil - a way to avoid attacking the roots of the disease-inducing insect, given its (fortunately) aversion to this type of soil. After great anxiety, we made the first harvest in 1995, 7 years after planting. In 2010 we celebrated the fifteenth harvest of this boldness. The wine now comes from an area increased to 2.5ha. As each vine produces only one cluster, ie one glass of wine, it takes the annual work of six vines to obtain a bottle. This is due not only to the lower production of the ungrafted vine, but also due to the successive weeding that we carry out with a view to obtaining a very full wine, that can thus hide the tannins of the grape variety and the acidity characteristic of the region's climate. These are key factors to give you an aging capacity that goes beyond twenty years, making it an excellent wine to celebrate the age, marriage or other relevant event for the son or daughter, with a wine of the year of his birth . Soalheiro Germinar Loureiro Vinhas Velhas White
Grapes are harvested by hand. After pressing, before fermentation, the must is clarified. Fermentation takes place in a stainless steel tank at a low temperature and in two egg-shaped deposits in our innovation area, one stainless steel and the other cement, so that the final batch, due to the constant battonage in the fine lees, transmits complexity and taste persistence superior to what we normally find in this variety. Bright lemon yellow color, elegant aroma marked by mineral and floral notes. Dry and fresh flavor, revealing the elegant side of the Loureiro variety, which always has a persistence of well-marked acidity. Contains sulfites.
