Founded in 1920 by the brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family business that was originally dedicated to the marketing of fine Douro wines and liqueurs. Today, the oldest family-run wine company still operating in the municipality of Anadia, in the 1930s, it passed the ban on the production of Porto wines outside Vila Nova de Gaia, to sell Bairrada table wines. At the end of the 50’s, one of the most famous wine brands in the Bairrada region – the “Frei João” – was born and, a little later, the “Porta dos Cavaleiros” brand from the Dão region. The harvested grapes rested for 24 hours in a refrigerated container at 8º C in order to protect the integrity of the bunches. Following selection on a mat of choice, 30% destemmed and 70% whole bunches were introduced into the vat, allowing the extraction of color and aroma compounds more smoothly during 3 weeks of alcoholic fermentation entirely in stainless steel vats, having completed the malolactic fermentation. in stainless steel. After aging 50% of used 4-year-old barrels of 400 L and 225 L of French oak, where it remained for 12 months. Wine with a deep ruby-violet color, aromas of rockrose surrounded by notes of forest fruits in a typical Douro setting. In the mouth seductive with some rusticity conferred by the stems of the grapes, combined with a more intense minerality resulting in a modern, long, fine and vibrant profile. Contains sulfites.

The grapes, coming from the Douro Superior, were transported in 22 kg boxes and subjected to rigorous sorting at the entrance to the winery. They were later de-stemmed and pressed. The pressed must was transferred to a stainless steel tank where it was kept at a temperature of 8ºC for 48 hours until it was decanted. Afterwards, the alcoholic fermentation started in a stainless steel tank and later the wine was transferred to French oak barrels where the fermentation ended at a temperature of 14ºC for a period of 45 days. Crasto Superior aged in French oak barrels, where it remained for 6 months, in the process of working fine lees “bâtonnage”, with the barrels resting on a rotating system that allows the lees to be lifted without incorporating oxygen. It has a pale lemon color, has an excellent freshness and minerality on the nose, well integrated with fresh citrus fruit notes. Evolves in the mouth in a captivating way to a wine of great seriousness, with a vibrant acidity and great volume, very fresh and mineral. A wine with a gastronomic profile that ends up seductive and with enormous persistence. Contains sulfites.

For Quinta da Pellada, mainly the field blend grapes of the old vineyard, but also the varieties Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz, where the intense fruit and freshness from the grapes of the farm that give the name to this wine is discovered. It has the most heterogeneous soils - all granite as a base - and the most limited mixture (Touriga Nacional and Alfrocheiro). It was aged in well-used French barrels for 28 months. Quinta da Pellada 49 has an intense garnet color. Bergamot, orange peel and aromas of wildflowers. In the mouth spices, cocoa and vanilla. Expressive, elegant and with generous tannins.
