Founded in 1920 by the brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family business that was originally dedicated to the marketing of fine Douro wines and liqueurs. Today, the oldest family-run wine company still operating in the municipality of Anadia, in the 1930s, it passed the ban on the production of Porto wines outside Vila Nova de Gaia, to sell Bairrada table wines. At the end of the 50’s, one of the most famous wine brands in the Bairrada region – the “Frei João” – was born and, a little later, the “Porta dos Cavaleiros” brand from the Dão region. Manual harvest in 18Kg boxes, careful selection of the best grapes in the vineyard. The grapes were fully destemmed and immediately pressed. The resulting must passed into a small stainless steel tank, where it was decanted at low temperature for 48 hours. The clean must started fermentation in stainless steel, with indigenous yeasts and controlled temperature. It is a very aromatic wine with a very pleasant and very feminine floral nose, in the mouth it is straight, very fresh, with a lot of acidity and with a medium finish.

The winemaking is classic in stainless steel vats with smooth skin maceration. Fermentation is controlled up to 26ºC for 9 days. The aging is done in French oak barrels for 6 months. Clear appearance, strong red color with hints of garnet, reveals a deep and elegant aroma of very ripe red fruits, where the notes of plum, blueberry and cherry stand out combined with soft expressions of fine vanilla, spices and dried fruits, married with a light fragrance. balsamic and faint breath of pine forest. In the mouth it shows outstanding complexity, it is round and harmonious, with good structure and balance of well integrated tannins, promising a good aging potential. It reveals a long persistence and an exquisite bouquet, showing the character of its terroir and the personality of the grape variety. Contains sulfites.

This wine expresses the desire to make a Touriga Nacional from old vines. In a region where the old vineyard consists of a wide range of grape varieties mixed in the same plot. In 2009, 3,500 kg of Touriga Nacional were harvested from a single 80-year-old vineyard, which implied making a choice of Touriga Nacional grape varieties in the large set of grape varieties of that parcel. Vinification was done in a cement vat with pre- and post-fermentative maceration. Aging for 1 year in 225 liter French oak barrels. Opaque red color, aroma of red fruits with spicy notes. Full-bodied, fresh and elegant. Long aftertaste. Contains sulfites.

Total destemming, 4 hours pre-fermentative cold skin maceration. Alcoholic fermentation at 18ºC. 25% in new barrels, 25% in 2nd use barrels and 50% in stainless steel. 50% of the wine aged for 6 months in French oak barrels with soft toast.
Tasting notes: Intense citrus color. Nuances of tropical fruits, exotic notes and predominant in complexity notes. Complex, fresh, distinct mouth volume, intense and long persistence.

Papa Figos Red

After destemming and crushing, the grapes are sent to stainless steel vats, where the films are macerated - gently and at controlled temperatures - and alcoholic fermentation. After finishing fermentations, maturation in stainless steel and cement vats follows. The batch is prepared based on the tests and analyzes carried out during this period. To preserve the highest quality, it is only subjected to light gluing and filtration before bottling. Ruby color, intense aroma, with heather bush notes, floral aromas, fresh red fruits and some balsamic, such as resin and cedar. In the mouth it has a smooth attack, presenting polished tannins of good quality, notes of red fruits and some spices. The finish is very elegant. Contains Sulfites.
