Niepoort Vintage 2005 Ruby

98,39
In 2005 the harvest had very hot and also very humid days. The production was high but with small berries that have concentrated the tannins and colour. Overripe and dry grapes were taken out to reassure the finesse of the wine. Vinha da Pisca (very old vineyard) with notes of coffee and black berries gave the final blend the desired freshness. Niepoort Vintage 2005 is fine, elegant, mineral but not balsamic, the floral and fruity character are enhanced. Delicate, assertive flavor with tannins, rich although not excessive and with a long finish. It is a robust wine although very elegant. Wine with a very fine and delicate aroma, with floral and fruity components in the spotlight. In the mouth, it is tannic but fine. Rich but not excessive and with a long spicy aftertaste. Perfect with “Queijo da Serra”, a Stilton or other blue cheeses. Egg based desserts with “Pão de Ló” (Portuguese sponge based cake).

When exquisite Port wines are aged in seasoned oak barrels for several years, they gradually lose their original deep purple color, acquiring the delicate amber hue known as tawny. In this process, the fruity simplicity of young Port gives way to a wide range of subtle and smooth flavors, such as licorice, nuts, honey, figs, vanilla, spices and refined oak. Ports with an indication of age are the result of blends over several years, developing a refined flavor through aging in selected oak barrels, which confer the maturity and character characteristic of old tawnies. The careful selection made by the cellar master guarantees the ideal integration of each blend. Older ports provide complexity and maturity, while younger ports provide vigor and freshness. The result is an aged Tawny, with the average age indicated on the label.

Manual harvest transported in boxes. Maceration in a stainless steel vat and vat at a temperature of approximately 28-30ºC. Stage 1 year in cask, and bottling in the second year. The vast majority of grapes come from the Pinhão River Valley, Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz withstand the heat of summer very well. These were joined by grapes from other Douro valleys, which translates into a classic blend of the region. Fermentation took place in a mixture of closed vats to guarantee freshness and aromatic components, as well as an open vat (lagar) to guarantee greater complexity and structure. After a slow and careful aging in our cellars in the Douro, this Vintage now has an intense and ripe fruity, as well as a floral that gives it excellent freshness. Shows a strong concentration and structure in the mouth always accompanied by a rich and variable aromatic component.
