Founded in 1920 by the brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family business that was originally dedicated to the marketing of fine Douro wines and liqueurs. Today, the oldest family-run wine company still operating in the municipality of Anadia, in the 1930s, it passed the ban on the production of Porto wines outside Vila Nova de Gaia, to sell Bairrada table wines. At the end of the 50’s, one of the most famous wine brands in the Bairrada region – the “Frei João” – was born and, a little later, the “Porta dos Cavaleiros” brand from the Dão region. This wine is an overview of our capabilities, and a true sensory experience based on the principle of exposing natural flavors, with little intervention. It was made from grapes from our three main farms, and with various varieties, of which Touriga Nacional, Jaen, Tinta Roriz and Alfrocheiro stand out, from some very old vines and others more recent.

With a citrus color, the wine initially shows good floral, citric, light tropical notes evolving later to some mineral notes, more discreet and elegant. In the mouth it is fresh, with a present and balanced acidity. Fine and complex, with a good fruit character, an excellent balance between alcohol, fruit and acidity, and a very fine and long finish. Contains Sulfites.
Arribas do Douro Superior White

The white grapes that make up this wine come from schist soil vineyards planted at an average altitude of 350 meters, with northeast exposure, between Freixo de Espada à Cinta and Barca d'Alva. Hand picking vintage. The grapes are slowly pressed, followed by fermentation at a temperature of 16ºC in French oak barrels with battonage. Aging for 6 months in French oak barrels and stainless steel vats with Battonage. Strong traces of minerality and citrus, with a light touch of wood caused by aging in French oak barrels. Contains sulfites.
Quinta da Pellada Encruzado Late Release White

This Encruzado comes from a plot at 500 meters altitude of granitic soil with lines of clay. After pre-fermentation skin contact and static decantation, fermentation took place in barrels (500/600L) with 5 years of use. The aging was very long (late release) in barrels without battonage or sulfur addition. Direct bottling without filtering or gluing. Contains sulfites.
