Caves São João Reserva Particular 1959 Red

Founded in 1920 by the brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family business that was originally dedicated to the marketing of fine Douro wines and liqueurs. Today, the oldest family-run wine company still operating in the municipality of Anadia, in the 1930s, it passed the ban on the production of Porto wines outside Vila Nova de Gaia, to sell Bairrada table wines. At the end of the 50’s, one of the most famous wine brands in the Bairrada region – the “Frei João” – was born and, a little later, the “Porta dos Cavaleiros” brand from the Dão region. Crosta Calcária dos Profetas White
149,00 €
Discover Crosta Calcária dos Profetas White, a wine that emerges from the unique geological zone in the north of Porto Santo Island. This region, characterized by the compactness of the limestone, gives the wine a unique minerality, reminiscent of the aromas of the sea and offering a wine experience of another dimension.
Viticulture is carried out using traditional methods, with old vines, between 40 and 80 years old, planted in limestone soils, protected from strong winds by reed beds and walls. Winemaking is meticulous: after rigorous selection and staggered harvests, the grapes are pressed whole. The must is decanted into fractions without SO2, allowing pre-oxidation and spontaneous fermentation. The musts ferment on lees in stainless steel vats and barrels, where they mature for 11 months.
This wine has a pale yellow color and an intensely saline and mineral nose, with nuances of gunpowder and iodine. In the mouth, it is full and textured, echoing the aromas with a remarkable persistence. Perfect for pairing with flavors from the sea, especially scallops and clams, Crusta Calcária dos Profetas White is an invitation to explore the richness of limestone soils through a glass.

José de Sousa Puro Talha White

At the José de Sousa winery, some ancestral winemaking techniques are still used, the most emblematic being the use of the mulch in the fermentation of the grapes. The essence of woodcarving winemaking has changed little in more than two thousand years. In this process, the white grapes are slightly crushed by foot and manually destemmed on a ripanço table. Fermentation takes place, without stems, in pots with an average capacity of 1,600 liters at a temperature of around 28ºC, being controlled by watering the pots 4 times a day. Fermentation takes approximately 8 days, leaving the wine in contact with the masses. Aged in amphorae for a period of 4 to 10 months, depending on the vintage. During this period, a film of oil is placed to prevent oxidation. Amber color, aroma of dried fruits, especially hazelnut. Spices, evolved, white pepper, ripe kiwi, bread, liqueur, hay. Elegant, complex palate, good acidity with a dry finish. Long and persistent finish. Contains sulfites.
