Founded in 1920 by the brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family business that was originally dedicated to the marketing of fine Douro wines and liqueurs. Today, the oldest family-run wine company still operating in the municipality of Anadia, in the 1930s, it passed the ban on the production of Porto wines outside Vila Nova de Gaia, to sell Bairrada table wines. At the end of the 50’s, one of the most famous wine brands in the Bairrada region – the “Frei João” – was born and, a little later, the “Porta dos Cavaleiros” brand from the Dão region. The grapes from several very old vineyards in the Alto Douro Vinhateiro (Mêda) were pressed in whole bunches, in order to extract the freshest and most vibrant must possible. Keeping the origin of each vineyard, the musts followed the alcoholic fermentation in new 500L French oak barrels. Fermentation process from indigenous yeasts, brings more complexity and character to wines. Long maturation on total lees (12 months). Malolactic partials make up the Burgundian-inspired route. Concise, elegant, frank, expressive. Fresh citrus notes with great notoriety, lime, grapefruit, flower, white fruit, irreproachable trace of pure minerality. Wide mouth, serious, exuberant acidity, salty, long trace. Contains sulfites.
Textura da Estrela Jaen Red

Textura da Estrela Jaen comes from a single plot in Vila Nova de Tazem (Serra da Estrela sub-region). Vineyards aged 28 years in granitic soils, sustainably treated, without herbicides, have been converting to organic certification since 2020. This Jaen fermented with indigenous yeasts only in cement vats with 35% whole bunch followed by 30 days of cuvaison. After aging the 1st winter in cement, it spent 6 months in French oak barrels. Naturally stabilized. Open color red with mineral and stone powder character, typical of cement tanks. Slight pepper and delicate fruit. It shows elegant tannins and is marked in the mouth by the granitic minerality, which often contributes to its peppery side. Long and precise acidity. With the potential to turn out to be different in a few years. Contains sulfites.
Tesouro da Sé Private Selection White

Aged in French oak barrels for 8 months followed by bottling. It reveals a bright citrus color and a very elegant aroma, showing delicate notes of linden and orange blossom, married with soft expressions of white pulp fruit and brief nuance of vanilla. In the mouth it is harmonious and complex with a good expression of structuring acidity, elegant minerality and exquisite persistence. Contains Sulfites.

Grapes from a vineyard called Vinha do Dote. All grapes are harvested by hand in 20 kg boxes. After a complete destemming and light crushing, they moved to stainless steel vats where they fermented. Total aging in Portuguese and French oak barrels for 15 months. Vineyards with an average age of 90 years. It presents an intense ruby color, reserved aroma with great complexity. Some spice, vegetable notes and hidden ripe fruit. Present and expressive fruit, wild fruits. Good volume in the mouth, serious, ripe and textured tannins and with freshness to balance the set well. Very long and persistent finish. Contains sulfites.

Alvarinho grapes are harvested manually from a selection of grapes from our vineyards in Quinta de Soalheiro, produced according to the concepts of organic farming where we protect the wine ecosystem, promoting biodiversity and environmental sustainability. The grapes, exclusively from the Alvarinho variety, are harvested manually in small capacity boxes and transported to the winery in a short time. After pressing, the decanted w decants for 48 hours, followed by fermentation and stage in (new and used barrels), remaining in the fine lees with periodic batonnage until the end of June. Intense yellow color, elegant and persistent aroma with nuances of barrel, maintaining the freshness and the fruit of the Alvarinho variety. The flavor is full bodied and complex. Contains Sulfites.
