Scala Coeli: A Syrah Shaped by Monastery and Terroir
At the heart of the Alentejo, Scala Coeli is produced at the ancient Monastery of Santa Maria Scala Coeli, former home of the Carthusian Monks and today part of the Fundação Eugénio de Almeida’s winemaking legacy. Planted on granitic soils, the Syrah vines are over 30 years old and have proven, vintage after vintage, their remarkable affinity with this terroir, yielding a red wine of distinct character and genuine depth. Aged for 15 months in French oak barrels and a further 16 months in bottle within the Monastery’s cellars, the Scala Coeli Syrah Red achieves a complexity and refinement that few Alentejo reds can match.
Tasting Notes
Deep and concentrated in colour, the Scala Coeli Syrah Red opens with impressive aromatic range: ripe blackberries and plum lead the way, layered with gentle oak, balsamic nuances, a hint of dark chocolate and subtle spice. On the palate it is powerful and full-bodied, with a commanding tannic structure, balanced acidity and a dense, persistent fruit that lingers through a long and polished finish.
Food Pairing and Serving Suggestions
Best enjoyed at the table, the Scala Coeli Syrah Red excels alongside slow-roasted red meats, game, aged cheeses and hearty Alentejo-inspired dishes. Serve between 16°C and 18°C to fully appreciate its aromatic profile. With an ideal drinking window from 2025 to 2040, it is equally well-suited for cellaring or as a gift for those who seek wines of true distinction.
